In a rare and historic move, the federal cabinet of Pakistan has approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of field marshal. The decision, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was taken to honour Munir’s military leadership during the recent conflict with India, referred to by the Pakistani government as the “Battle of Haq.”
The elevation marks only the second time in Pakistan’s history that such a rank has been awarded, reflecting what the cabinet described as General Munir’s “extraordinary contribution” to national defence. The May 6–7 conflict, which Islamabad claims was triggered by Indian aggression, saw significant cross-border clashes, including civilian casualties. Pakistan credited its armed forces with delivering a decisive response.
During the meeting, the cabinet praised Munir’s strategic leadership and reaffirmed the country’s military preparedness. The ministers also offered prayers for the personnel who lost their lives in the conflict and acknowledged the nation’s unity during the crisis.
In a parallel move, the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu has also been extended, in recognition of his leadership during the hostilities. The government noted that the armed forces’ performance during the crisis had bolstered Pakistan's credibility and reputation internationally.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also briefed the cabinet on the national security landscape post-conflict and appreciated the role of the Pakistani media in promoting a unified national narrative.
